Very comprehensive article. Thank you. Many things I didn't know, and I've been an admirer since getting the first album as a present back in the day. One thing though; on the single from Aardvark, I think Side I Am would be the "A-side" for two reasons: a) It's much more "radio friendly", and b) the serial number for it is L-51485, whereas Witches Stone is L-51486. Oh, another thing; WS seems to be just Ow-ing Man without the vocals - perhaps they were anticipating the karaoke craze?

My neighbor was Tony Cavallari, the guitar player in H.P. Lovecraft. We lived in Lansing, Illinois on Indiana Avenue. Never will forget my brother and I taking Tony's Mom up to one of their early small gigs near Chicago to hear 'em. Ate pizza with the band afterwards as Tony and his Mom caught up on things. Thinking back on it now is so surreal.

Thank you SO MUCH for this very informative and quite thorough article on one of my very favorite bands. I was in high school when a classmate turned me on to a slew of albums her brother, who was then a student at Berkeley, had sent her, including such classics as the first Iron Butterfly and "Giant Crab Comes Forth". She was totally into top-40 AM radio, so thought the albums he had sent her were really weird, but I knew I had stumbled into the Promised Land! I must have listened to "White Ship" from the first HPL album a hundred times in a row. When I discovered "HPL II" I finally reached nirvana. I re-entered paradise when Collector's Choice issued the albums on CD, both on a single disc!!! Heaven!!! And now, thanks to you, I have the complete backstory to go along with the music. I really appreciate it, and shall track down some of my other faves on your great site. THANKS AGAIN!!!! Peace & Love, man!!!

Great, detailed piece, Nick. For the record, the Magic Mushroom was not on Hollywood Blvd.--which would place it in Hollywood--but it was over the hill in the Valley on Ventura Blvd., which was in Studio City.

Dear NickStumbled across your great article today, and was knocked out to finally get some info on a band who I have been listening to for 40 years. Actually saw them live at our teen rec center in suburbs of Chicago. Also a bit amazed to find I have the same birthday as Dave Michaels. Have always wondered where they ended up in their lives, so I am very grateful to have so many holes filled in for me. Thank you and congratulations. If any band members happen to read this, thank YOU too very much. It is music that has truly been part of my life ever since you made it. Cheers, Carl

Dear Nick,
Nice web site. I was reading you article regarding the "new Buffalo
pringfield" in Salt Lake City. You are correct, the show was indeed at the
errace Ballroom; however, they were billed as The Buffalo Springfield and they
ere at the top of the bill. Disappointing to say the least! They even did a
over a song by "Spirit" I believe it was "Mechanical world". I stood in line
or two hours, in the rain waiting to get in. Total bummer!
The Buffalo Springfield show at the Salt Lake City Fairgrounds with HP Lovecraft
as right on the mark. Fabulous we were all surprised because reports of
revious shows were not encouraging.
Best regards,
Butch

Dewey was a very nice guy and will be missed. I was his patent attorney and got him a patent (under his legal Name Walter M. D. Midkiff) for his rimshot drum--patent # 5,834,667, 1998 Nov 10.
